Kiosk Redesign

User-friendly kiosk UI for fast-food restaurants

About

The number of kiosk installation stores has increased, but the silver generation has not been included in kiosk design, and there are limitations in education due to different UI designs for different brands. Consequently, I conducted a kiosk redesign to improve usability in order to address these problems.

Background

1) Kiosk market outlook

2) Kiosk usability by age group in fast food restaurant

The kiosk market is showing an increasing trend, but the older age group does not prefer to use the kiosk when self-ordering in fast food restaurant.

Problems

What make the older age group difficult using a self-order in fast food restaurant?

Insight

I have gathered insights from people who have difficulty using kiosks, primarily the elderly, but also of all ages.

Goal

My final goal for this project is to improve the kiosk user interface in a user-friendly manner to benefit consumers, businesses, and employees.

Personas

I have created two types of persona based on different age groups and digital device proficiency levels.

Journey Map

I have created kiosk journey maps based on the two personas I have set previously.

Flow Chart

Overall process of a user using kiosk when ordering at a fast food restuarant.

User Test

  1. “Please order a burger set.”

  2. “Please add bacon in burger ingredients options.”

  3. “Please change the beverage option sprite to zero coke.”

  4. “Please make a size up for the side options.”

  5. “Please check the final order details and make the payment in cash.”

  6. “Please check your number and go to the counter to make the payment.”

Task for Users

  1. "I'm not sure what ingredients come with the burger by default when selecting the burger ingredients."

  2. "There seems to be inconsistency in the text for adding and changing the burger, drink, side dish options when selecting a set menu."

  3. "It would be helpful to have prices displayed on the order summary or receipt."

Brand Application

Example of applying kiosk guidelines to maintain brand identity for consistent kiosk UI design that minimizes user confusion.

Takeaways

My takeaways on redesigning the fast-food kiosk for the senior generation.

I have worked on a significant project to redesign the fast-food kiosk UI with a particular focus on the elderly as the primary user group. My final aim was to propose a kiosk UI guide to minimize the inconvenience of having different UIs for each brand. To enhance usability, we structured the design into three areas (category, menu, payment) on one screen to minimize confusion during usage. I also considered the younger generation's experience with digital devices and aimed to create a better design suitable for people of all ages and genders, thereby broadening the user base.

Overall, this project was a departure from the typical web and app-centric UX/UI design and presented an opportunity to create solutions for new digital devices.
